History at Minterne

 Statement of intent

At Minterne Junior School, our intent for History is to spark children’s curiosity about the past and help them understand how history has shaped the world they live in today. Through engaging lessons and hands-on experiences, we aim to bring history to life and inspire a lifelong love of learning about the past.

We want our pupils to:

  • Develop a strong sense of chronology and understand the sequence of historical events.
  • Explore the lives of significant individuals, events, and civilisations from Britain and around the world.
  • Ask questions, think critically, and use evidence to understand and interpret the past.
  • Recognise similarities and differences between periods of history and relate these to their own lives.
  • Understand that people’s lives have been different across time and places and recognise how events in history have led to changes in the way we live today.

Our History curriculum is carefully planned to build knowledge, vocabulary, and skills progressively from Year 3 to Year 6. We strive to incorporate strong cross-curricular links with subjects such as English, Geography, and Art, and use local history and educational visits to deepen understanding and create meaningful connections. Throughout their learning, pupils also develop key historical skills such as analysing sources, asking perceptive questions, making comparisons, identifying cause and effect, and drawing conclusions based on evidence.

By the time they leave us, our pupils will be confident young historians who are curious, reflective, and well-prepared for the next stage of their historical learning journey.
